Notable Games

There is just one game in the chess database for Bill Gates as he does not practice seriously or compete in chess tournaments. But the one game is a good one since it’s against the reigning World Champion and arguably the best chess player to ever live, Magnus Carlsen.

Bill Gates vs Magnus Carlsen – Television Exhibition, London England, January 23, 2014

The game received the name, “I’m Just a Bill”, after Carlsen checkmated Gates after just 9 moves. The Declined Variation of the Nimzowitsch Defense was played. Gates started off well, following the opening principles by developing his minor pieces and taking space in the center. After a few moves, Gates simply didn’t spot the mating pattern Carlsen was getting in position for.
