Biography
Eric Rosen was born and raised in Skokie, Illinois. He was born a Virgo, usually characterized as someone with a high sense of organization, confidence, and natural leadership. His first encounter with chess was when he saw a chess set while on a family holiday in the Caribbean country of the Bahamas. From there, he started nurturing his passion for chess with the help of his parents.
He attended Niles North High School and played for its chess team, leading them to two chances in the state finals and three in the national finals. In his hometown, city officials have proclaimed May 16, 2011, as the “Eric Rosen Day” to celebrate his successes in the international chess scene.
Aside from his chess career, he holds a bachelor’s degree in Interactive Digital Media from Webster University. He is still an active chess player and does YouTube and Twitch streaming from time to time and his photography.
As of 2021, he has an estimated but not verified net worth of around $5 million. He also enjoys tea and taking photos, which can be seen on his official Instagram account for photography.
The Beginning
His fascination with chess started when he was on a family holiday in the Bahamas. From there, he started to develop his skills with the help of his parents carefully. Eric’s first chess tournament was the 3rd Illinois Grand State Championship, also his first victory as a chess player.
He continued to reap achievements throughout his high school career, with three national matches among high school chess teams in the United States. His breakthrough happened in 2011 when he successfully defeated International Master Marc Arnold in the 2011 US K-12 Championships.
Achievements
A university offered him a full scholarship in Texas. Still, his future roommate convinced him to study in Illinois, attending his University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign classes from 2012 to 2014. From there, he reached the President’s Cup in 2014 and 2015 under the tutelage of Susan Polgar, one of the best chess International Masters of all time.
In 2009, he defeated Grandmaster John Fedorowicz at a momentous US Open held in Indianapolis. He also received the title of National Master in the same year.
In 2011, he finished ninth in the World U-18 Championship held in Caldas Novas, Brazil. He was also awarded two titles in the same year: the titles of Life Master and FIDE Master. He received the Life Senior Master title in 2013, then received the title of International Master in 2015.
His FIDE rankings have started to become stagnant around the 2300s in three years, from 2012 to 2015, even dipping low to 2259 in 2013. However, he managed to raise his rankings due to a historic win with his second IM norm in 2013 and winning the North American Masters in Skokie, his hometown, making the win all the more special for him.
He raised his ranking further in 2015 after gaining 50 points with his third consecutive International Master norm. He topped it with a tied first-place finish in the U2400 division. He gained another 51.4 points for his second-place win at the Chicago Open. He also received his fourth International Master norm during that time.
These two victories have launched him to his peak rating on the FIDE leaderboard, finishing at 2423. For more information on FIDE and ratings, see the step-by-step guide on how to get a FIDE rating. This made him qualified for the title of International Master, which was awarded to him in Abu Dhabi in September 2015.
Final Thoughts
Eric Rosen is still active in the chess circles, juggling his other passions in photography and streaming on both YouTube and Twitch.
According to his official website, he still intends on achieving the Grandmaster title. However, as of this writing, he still has no norms under his belt, which makes him ineligible for the title at the time.
However, he also said that he’s not in a rush to get the title because he is currently enjoying his life and passions. He also mentioned that once he achieves the Grandmaster title, he will change his domain to gmrosen.com, which he has reserved in advance for this occasion.
