Alexander Moiseenko – A True Chess Master

Alexander Moiseenko was born on May 17, 1980 at Severomorsk. His family moved to Ukraine when he was just nine years old. He won the U-16 World Championship held in Spain in the year 1996, claiming the International Masters title. This built the foundation of his performance which kept on improving over the years. He secured second position in the Ukrainian Junior Championship in 1998 and tied for a shared 2nd-5th position in the European U-18 championship in the same year. He earned his first GM norm at the Ukrainian Grandmaster event held in 1999. Orel 1999 gave him his second norm as he tied for 1st -2nd position. He also became champion in the Krasnodar Kuban event in the year, giving him his final norm and the long coveted Grandmaster title.

Moiseenko’s success continued as he came second in the Ukrainian Junior Championship in 2000. He played for Ukraine in the 2003 and 2005 European Team Championships and the 2005 World Team Championships. Calvia, 2004 saw him as a proud member of the gold medal winning Ukrainian team. Moiseenko also shared a 4-11th place at the EU Championships held in Istanbul, 2003. This performance helped him qualify for the FIDE World Chess Championship of 2004 where he made it until the third round.

2006 saw more accolades as he won the Cappelle-la-Grande open and the Quebec Open. He tied for first in the Canadian Open Chess Championship held in Montreal in the year 2008 and won the Edmonton International Tournament that very year. Alexander Moiseenko has a current FIDE ranking of 2667, making him a part of the chess playing greats of Ukraine.
