William Steele Chess Player Profile

Welcome to the official Chess player profile of William Steele. William is also an editor of The Chess Journal.

William is a new Chess player, (which we welcome and love seeing new players) however he became obsessed with Chess after playing his first game in his adult life. In 3 short months, he’s played hundreds of games and has a current rating of 1049.

He is dedicated to learning theory, openings, attacking tactics, and everything in between. He also studies the games of Grandmasters every day. Daniil Dubov is one of his favorite players. He also watches streamers like Gotham Chess and Hikaru on a daily basis.

How To Get Better Faster

He started playing in person over the board with a friend that played his whole life. They played a couple hundred games and lost all of them. Then he started playing on Chess.com. He started watching YouTube videos and started studying theory.

Learning an opening made a big difference. He started with the Advanced French Defense. When he started playing that opening, he went from 700 to 900 in a few days. Most beginner Chess players never even learn an opening, which drastically handicaps them. Playing Chess games over and over will make you a better player, but not by much. Studying Chess is arguably more important that playing games.
