Biography
Chao b Li is a Chinese chess Grandmaster born on April 21, 1989, in Taiyuan, Shanxi, China. Chao b was awarded the title of Grandmaster in 2007. As of October 2022, his FIDE rating was 2672, while his Peak rating was 2758 as of June 2016.
The Beginning
Chao Li began playing chess at the age of six. Chao Li secured sixth place at the World Junior Chess Tournament in Istanbul in 2005. Li won the Scandinavian Chess Tournament in Täby, Sweden, in August 2007, with 8.5 points out of a possible 9. Furthermore, Chao Li won the fourth IGB Dato’ Arthur Tan Malaysia Open in Kuala Lumpur in September 2007.
On November 2007, Chao Li won the President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Cup in Manila. At the 10th Dubai Open in April 2008, Li finished tied first with 7 points out of 9 games and 4th on deciding set. Li finished second on points 8 out of 11 games and first on a seeding at the second Philippine International Open in Subic Bay Freeport Zone in May 2008. He won the 5th IGB Dato’ Arthur Tan Malaysia Open in August 2008 with 9/11 points.
In the 2009 Chess World Cup, hosted in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, Li advanced to the 3rd round before being defeated by Vugar Gashimov after failing to arrive on time for the subsequent game of the rapid seedings due to smoking, and the tournament was disqualified. Chao Li finished ninth in the 2011 Tata Steel B championship with a score of 6 points out of 13 games. Li competed in the 2011 Chess World Cup but was knocked out in the initial round by Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son. In the second Indonesia Open Chess Championship in 2012, he leveled for first with Yu Yangyi but finished second in a deciding set.
Notable Achievements
Li won the men’s individual chess tournament at the 2011 Summer Universiade in Shenzhen with a score of 8.5 out of 9 games, finishing two points above the field, including fellow Chinese Wang Hao and Wang Yue.
In October 2011, Li defeated Ganguly Surya Shekhar in a deciding set to win the Indonesia Open Chess Tournament in Jakarta.
Li Chao won the Corus C championship in Wijk aan Zee in 2010 with 10 points out of 13 games. The success advanced him to the 2011 Corus Group B chess championship, later renamed Tata Steel Chess Tournament Group B.
Li won the 48th Doeberl Cup in Canberra, Australia, a few months later, in April 2010. Li triumphed in this latter tournament once more in 2013.
