In January 1998, Carlos recorded his highest rating when he reached a peak of 2435. In addition, he has participated in the Guatemala national chess championships several times and has become a 27 times winner of the tournament. He started becoming the game’s champion in 1980, consecutively to 1988. He continued his lead in 1991, 1993 to 1995, and 1998 to 2012. He finally defended his champion title in the 2014 to 2017 edition of the tournament.
