Biography

Alexander Donchenko is a Russian-German Grandmaster chess player born in Moscow, Russia, on March 22, 1998. Donchenko was awarded the Grandmaster title in 2015, the International Master title in 2012, and the Candidate Master title in 2011. As of February 2021, his Peak rating was 2678.

The Beginning

Donchenko took part in the 2018European Individual Chess Championship held in March and placed 114th with a score of 6 out of 11 games. In 2019, Donchenko competed in the European Championship again, finishing 103rd with 6.5/11 points. Donchenko and Gata Kamsky tied for second place with 6.5/9 points at the Biel Masters in July 2019, half a point behind winner Amin Tabatabaei. Donchenko competed in the Barcelona Open 2019, which took place from September 27 to October 5, and finished first with a score of 7.5/9 points. Daniil Dubov withdrew from the 83rd Tata Steel Masters due to close associate testing positive for COVID-19, so Donchenko was a late replacement. Donchenko finished last in the tournament, scoring 3.5/13 points.
